Beginnings

Star birth

“And suddenly you know: It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.”
– Meister Eckhart

My life is full of beginnings. I have a new role at Mosaic as a facilitator, this is a new school year, I am in a new phase in my relationship with Zack. It’s a scary, exciting time for me. I am moving from what is safe but unfulfilling to the precarious place of following dreams. It is uncomfortable at times, full of successes and failures, laughter and tears, but ultimately much more rewarding than the safe path.

Most of the kids already know me, but only as Zack’s mom. How can I best serve in my new role? The kids and I need to know each differently to find that answer, so we are on building our relationships in the Cloud Room Spawn . As a new group we are learning how to communicate and to support each other. Games and casual conversations are helping us get comfortable. We are finding common ground – favorite movies, colors, and foods, why we love our school and why it is important to us. We are sharing our dreams. We want to become a veterinarian, a millionaire, a farmer, a famous fisherman, and an astronaut. We want to live on land with friends, thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, and experience zero gravity.

A discussion about making our dreams come true by setting achievable goals led to me asking the kids to think about their goals for this school year. Over the next couple of weeks, we will develop these into SMART goals, determine what tools will help us along the way, and discuss how we can best support each other to achieve our individual goals. We may find that some of our dreams will stay dreams, that they didn’t mean as much to us as we thought. We will make new dreams and new plans. We will begin new things.

I can’t imagine a more magical place for beginnings that what we are building together at ALC Mosaic. I am so excited to find out where we go, to find the balance between working toward the results I want and trusting enough to step back see what happens.
